In another world when I was young and he was younger, my invaluable tutor and passing guru was the gentle, wise and twinkling Fritz Wegner.

Saint Martins School of Art, early 1980s. We were privy to riches such as this.

Ever the gentleman, ever the gentle man. What an honour to have spent time with – and gained insights into my future trade from – him.

One cherished memory: post-college and he picked me up in a suitably quirky car from my glum flat in Finsbury Park and took me to the Chelsea Arts Club for a drink. One of many typical kindnesses.
We observed as the author Laurie Lee clung onto the bar like we were on a storm-tossed sea.
